Real Communication is about Sharing Feelings

Share your feelings

Share your feelings for a happy relationship

Real communication in a relationship is about sharing.  It’s about sharing your feelings and thoughts with someone you are close to.

It’s about discussing what you think and feel about the things that are important to you.

If you can communicate your feelings and your thoughts and ideas with someone – you are feeding your relationship. You are nurturing it.

It’s the best way for you to sustain and develop your relationship in a meaningful way. Because effective communication is the lifeline of your relationship.

On the other hand if you keep all your thoughts and emotions to yourself your relationship will soon suffer.

It won’t be able to survive if you cut off its lifeline.  And where communication breaks down there’s trouble.

A breakdown in communication

A breakdown in communication will have an immediate impact on any relationship. Just think about what happens when communication between two countries starts to break down – history shows us that it has often led to war.

Now I’m not saying that a breakdown of communication in your relationship will lead to war! But if there is no sharing of ideas and thoughts, your relationship will start to dry up like a plant that withers when it receives no food and water.

A weakened relationship allows the wellspring of trust to dry out.  And as you know, a relationship without trust cannot survive.

How to save your relationship

The best way to save your relationship is through meaningful communication! You have to share your feelings.

Unfortunately, for some people communicating on a deeper level is very difficult. They can chatter endlessly about food they enjoy or movies they have seen or the latest headlines in the news.

But they clam up when it comes to sharing their real feelings about things that are important to them.  They become shy about sharing the things that affect them emotionally.

Wherever you find it difficult to share your feelings – that is precisely the area that you should be looking at.  It’s a signal to you that this is the area that needs the most attention.

In a relationship you need to be able to discuss the things that are important to you. If you can only discuss trivial things it does not say much about your relationship.

To have a meaningful relationship you need to be able to discuss matters that are meaningful to both of you. You need to be able to communicate by sharing your thoughts and feelings.

  2. If you dread talking to your partner about the state of your relationship you’re not alone. Start smart by choosing your words wisely. There’s no one-size-fits-all way to begin these conversations but “we need to talk” is probably never a good idea. As with any potentially difficult conversation it can be stated something like this “There are some things I”d like to talk with you about and get your input”.

  3. I wish more people would write blogs like this that are really fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is rare to read a blog like this instead.
